When to use A&E
Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments are for serious or life-threatening emergencies. If you are unsure where to go for help, NHS 111 can guide you to the most appropriate service.
Call 999 or go to A&E if you or someone else has:
-
chest pain or signs of a heart attack
-
severe difficulty breathing
-
signs of a stroke
-
heavy bleeding that will not stop
-
loss of consciousness
-
severe burns
-
a serious injury or suspected broken bone with major deformity
For urgent medical help that is not life-threatening:
-
use NHS 111 online
-
call 111
-
contact the practice during opening hours for advice and appointments
For minor illnesses or self-care advice, think about:
-
your local pharmacy
-
self-care information
-
routine GP appointments
