When to use A&E

Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments are for serious or life-threatening emergencies. If you are unsure where to go for help, NHS 111 can guide you to the most appropriate service.

Call 999 or go to A&E if you or someone else has:

  • chest pain or signs of a heart attack

  • severe difficulty breathing

  • signs of a stroke

  • heavy bleeding that will not stop

  • loss of consciousness

  • severe burns

  • a serious injury or suspected broken bone with major deformity

For urgent medical help that is not life-threatening:

  • use NHS 111 online

  • call 111

  • contact the practice during opening hours for advice and appointments

For minor illnesses or self-care advice, think about:

  • your local pharmacy

  • self-care information

  • routine GP appointments
